The day after Thanksgiving officially marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season, also known as Black Friday. For retailers, it is the busiest shopping day of the season as shoppers begin to tackle their holiday shopping list. This year, retailers are opening earlier than ever, with some stores launching their sales at midnight. As an avid deal-hunter and geek, there is an inherent “thrill” to braving the Black Friday crowds and getting some pretty sweet deals on tech.

Develop Your Black Friday Game Plan

The key to a successful Black Friday is lots of turkey, football (go 49ers!), and plenty of rest.  First, you’ll need to develop your game-plan, decide what stores you want to hit, and which products to tackle first. Unless you plan on waiting in line well before the turkey is cooked, consider having 1-2 backup options, especially for the early bird products. I recommend bringing copies of the ads and your prioritized list, so you’ll stay on track, and on budget.

The next tough decision is to determine whether you’re going to the midnight or early morning sales. For the midnight sales, feast relatively early, so your turkey has time to settle. Standing in the cold with a gut full of stuffing and gravy isn’t exactly fun. For early morning sales, give into your turkey comatose state and fall asleep early… you’ll need the energy! Then, decide whether you want to wait in line, or see what’s left. If you leave the house at the time of the sale, chances are you’ll miss out on the “limited quantity” items. But then again, it beats standing out in the frozen tundra for three hours.

As temperatures continue their downward spiral in the coming months, desperately trying to stay warm becomes a high priority for most folks. Understandably so. I think it was Deborah Kerr in An Affair to Remember who uttered the line “winter must be cold for those with no warm memories…” but she probably didn’t have a DVD player and a television set. The sheer genius of The Larry Sanders Show can be measured by the wealth of comedy it has influenced since first being broadcast. Chronicling the daily grind of running a nightly talk show, Garry Shandling is perfect as the neurotic, vain and self-centered host. But it’s the incredible supporting cast who elevate this show beyond good, and into brilliant.
